British winner at the XTERRA World Championship
Scottish athlete, Lesley Paterson won the 16th XTERRA World Championship last weekend in Maui, as 675 athletes including legendary cyclist Lance Armstrong completed a 1.5km swim, a 30km mountain bike and a 10km trail run.
Due in part to a punctured tire on her bike, Paterson started the run course in fourth place – nearly six-and-a-half minutes behind then-leader Melanie McQuaid. Paterson quickly ran down the three women in front of her and managed to take the women’s title by more than two minutes.
“I felt really good,” said Paterson, who is originally from Scotland, but now resides in San Diego, California. “I was so angry because I punctured on the bike, and I think that anger helped me to really sort of knuckle down and go as hard as I could and see where the chips would fall.”
I had pre-run the course a lot,” she said. “I came out 10 days early just to make sure I knew the course really well, especially the run for me because that’s where I thought I could win it.”
Paterson, 31, finished with a time of 02:45:59, including a run time of 43:54, which was nearly three minutes faster than any of the other females. Her run time was the same as the male and was topped by only 12 other males in the entire field.
British Triathlon Event of the Year Award Shortlisted
The British Triathlon Annual Awards Dinner celebrates success across all areas of our sport, and one of the most sought after awards is the title of British Triathlon Event of the Year.
Past winners have included the famous Toshiba Windsor Triathlon and a firm favourite amongst many triathletes the Club Relays.
The award is not for the event with most competitors, or that has the biggest budget, but for those organisers that go that extra step to making their event stand out from the rest.
In the build up to this year’s awards, we look at the events that have made the shortlist for the coveted title.
Cowman, promoted by Big Cow Events
Big Cow events are well known on the triathlon circuit, with a history of delivering quality events in and around Milton Keynes. This year’s event hosted the British Middle Distance Championships at Emberton Park, and as always provided quality racing at great value, a hallmark of the work the Big Cow events do annually.
The Outlaw, promoted by One Step Beyond
Taking on the long distance triathlons is an ambitious undertaking, but One Step Beyond not only pulled it off with the Outlaw but actually set themselves apart by focussing on providing a high quality, friendly and well priced event in the surrounds of Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham. The Outlaw has created a unique brand for itself, which will no doubt go from strength to strength over the coming the years.
Durty Triathlon, promoted by Scottish Borders Triathletes
The Durty Triathlon is now a firm fixture on the cross triathlon fixture list in the UK, and in 2010 hosted the inaugural British Championships. The event provides a complete cross triathlon experience, with a challenging course combined with an excellent atmosphere.
Snowdonia Slateman Triathlon, promoted by Always Aim High
A new event for 2011, the Snowdonia Slateman, set in the breathtaking location of Llanberis at the foot of Snowdon, comprised a 750m open water mountain lake swim, 51km stunning road cycle incorporating the amazing Llanberis Pass and Ogwen Valley, and finally a gorgeous and gruelling 11km run through the World famous Dinorwig Slate Quarries and Padarn Country Park.
Tri Together, promoted by Leonard Cheshire Disability
Tri Together was another new event for 2011, promoted by an organisation new to triathlon. Focussed on demonstrating that people with disabilities can take part in our sport by driving inclusiveness and accessibility as its core values, Tri Together utilised an extremely effective marketing plan to become widely known within and engaged with the triathlon community.
In total 27 events put forward a nomination for the awards, making 2011 the most contested British Triathlon Event of the Year so far. Each event demonstrated their commitment to delivering a high quality experience to not only competitors but also volunteers and spectators, a core value of the Home Nations Associations and British Triathlon.
The winner will be announced at the British Triathlon Annual Awards dinner to be held on the 12th November at the Barceló Hinckley Island Hotel. Tickets are still available and can be purchased through the British Triathlon shop at www.britishtriathlon.org/shop
Event and Club Registration closes Monday 31 October - register now!
Event Organisers and Club Committees have until midnight Monday 31 October to register their events and clubs online with British Triathlon in order to be included in the British Triathlon Annual Handbook for 2012.
The British Triathlon Annual Handbook is distributed to members of the Home Nation Associations, with over 16,000 produced every year.
In 2011 over 800 events in England, Wales and Scotland have or will have been permitted, an increase of 11% on events held in 2010. All events permitted through the Home Nation Associations are demonstrating their commitment to organising, safe, fair and enjoyable events for competitors, and making a vital contribution to the continued growth and success of the sport in the UK.
The list of permitted events each year is an illustrious one, including the Toshiba Windsor Triathlon, Virgin Active London Triathlon, GE Blenheim Triathlon and Dextro Energy Triathlon London, as well as hundreds of events run by clubs, commercial operators and charities.
To register your triathlon, paratriathlon, duathlon or aquathlon event you will need to visit the Event Organisers website. Event Organisers can register an event from scratch or copy your 2011 submission onto your 2012 listing.
A deposit of £35 will need to be paid (this does not apply to Scottish events) before the event will appear in the British Triathlon Handbook and website. If this deposit is not paid by Monday 31st October 2011, then the event will not be included in the handbook.

Avil awaits European challenge
Hollie Avil is set for the ETU U23 Triathlon European Championships in Eilat this Saturday. The southern Israeli port will welcome Europe’s up and coming triathletes as the city prepares to host the senior ETU European Championships next April.
Avil, who won the world U23 title on the Gold Coast in 2009, hopes to build on the form that saw her win the Larache ITU Sprint Triathlon African Cup in Morocco two weeks ago.
The 21 year old has already taken her end of season break and begun her build up to next summer. She has recently changed coaches, and will spend the winter on the Gold Coast with Michelle Dillon and the training group that includes Jodie Stimpson, Will Clarke and Stuart Hayes. However, she’ll first look for a strong result in Eilat.
She said: “I’m really looking forward to racing this weekend. It’s been an up and down season, but I’ve taken a break, started working with Michelle Dillon and I feel really positive.”
Vanessa Raw will also take part in the Eilat ITU Triathlon European Cup on Saturday.

Wellington wins Ironman triathlon world title for the fourth time
Chrissie Wellington dramatically won the Ford Ironman World Championship title in Kona, Hawaii yesterday, 8 October. Having won the title on three previous occasions (2007, 2008 and 2009), Wellington recaptured the crown with arguably her hardest-fought victory to date.
Wellington's win was in the second fastest time ever recorded in Hawaii, 8hours 55:08 for the 3800m swim, 112mile bike ride and 26.2mile run, only her own 2009 performance was slightly faster. However, the win didn't look assured until the final mile, with Wellington having to make up a lot of ground on the early leaders during the run.
Defending champion, Miranda Carfrea of Australia, pushed Wellington right to the finish, closing the gap between them to two minutes before Chrissie stretched the gap again in the final two miles.
Wellington said: "This race means more to me than anything. It's the sweetest victory - I just proved that anything is possible. There were times that my body was going to give up on me. I think the hardest victories are definitely the sweetest. To be crowned the Ford Ironman World Champion is the greatest honour."
Former ITU World Champion, Leanda Cave, came in third and Rachel Joyce was fourth, demonstrating the dominance of British women in long distance triathlon. Julie Dibens had also led through the swim and bike sections and had a huge lead at the start of the run. However, the third place finisher from 2010 was forced to withdraw with a foot injury.
Tom Lowe, the British men's record holder, was 11th in his first Ironman World Championship with a time of 8hours 29:02. Australian Craig Alexander won in a new championship record time of 8hours 03:56.
Britain's amateur athletes recorded top ten finishes across various age groups, including Sam Baxter (7th, 25-29), Sophie Whitworth (9th, 40-44) and Chris Domoney (9th, 60-64).
Women's result:
1. Chrissie Wellington, GBR, 8:55:08
2. Mirinda Carfrae, AUS, 8:57:57
3. Leanda Cave, GBR, 9:03:29
4. Rachel Joyce, GBR, 9:06:57
5. Caroline Steffen, SWI, 9:07:32
11. Catriona Morrison, GBR, 9:22:07
Men's result:
1. Craig Alexander, AUS, 8:03:56
2. Pete Jacobs, AUS, 8:09:11
3. Andreas Raelert, GER, 8:11:07
4. Dirk Bockel, LUX, 8:12:58
5. Timo Bracht, GER, 8:20:12
11. Tom Lowe, GBR, 8:29:02

Wellington targets world title in Hawaii
Chrissie Wellington MBE is aiming for her fourth Ironman world title in Kona, Hawaii this weekend as 71 British athletes race at the home of long-distance triathlon. Vanessa Raw will also face Vanessa Fernandez at the Huatulco ITU Triathlon World Cup in Mexico.
Wellington goes into this weekend having previously won the title in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and she holds the current world record over the 2.4mile swim, 112mile bike ride and 26.2mile distance (8hours18:13). Illness on the morning of the 2010 race prevented her from starting, but she has never been beaten over the distance since bursting onto the scene to win the world title in 2007.
Wellington lines up alongside a very strong British contingent that includes last year’s third place finisher, Julie Dibens. Rachel Joyce also finished fifth last year and Leanda Cave was 10th, demonstrating the dominance of British women in long distance triathlon.
On the men’s side Tom Lowe races for the first time in Kona, having set the British record during his Iroman debut in Arizona last November.
In addition to the professional athletes, 1,700 amateur athletes, including 64 from Britain, will gun for world titles in their age group, having come through qualifying events to secure their places in the world’s most iconic Ironman event.
Sophie Whitworth, the current British Triathlon Age Group Athlete of the year, is aiming for honours in the 40-44 Age Group. She won the ITU world age group title in Budapest last September and combines training with a managerial role supporting Cadburys’ Olympic sponsorship.
On a blog for Tri247, Whitworth commented: “I have a massive respect for this race, it is really tough, and is the ultimate challenge in triathlon and something I can't wait to take on.”
The Ford Ironman World Championships take place in Kona, Hawaii on Saturday 8 October. There is a live video feed available via http://ironmanlive.com, starting at 6.30am for professional athletes and 7.00am for amateurs (local time, 5:30pm start time on Saturday in the UK).
