British athletes Hungary for success in Tiszaujvaros
Tiszaujvaros will host the sixth round of the 2010 ITU Triathlon World Cup this Sunday, marking the 14th consecutive year that "Tiszy", as it's often referred to, has hosted a World Cup. The event is renowned for having some of the best spectator support on the World Cup circuit, as thousands of locals jam the streets year after year to catch some of the action.
The event will feature six British athletes including Jodie Swallow, recent winner of the Alpe d'Huez Long Course Triathlon and 2009 ITU Long Distance Triathlon champion. Jodie is also coming off a seventh place finish in London, just two weeks ago, proving she is on form and will be one to watch.
Vanessa Raw and Jacqui Slack are also racing. Both athletes have won a race of the 2010 British Triathlon Super Series and will be aiming to transfer their domestic success onto the international stage.
The final British woman who will be making her debut on the ITU Triathlon World Cup circuit is Lois Rosindale. Lois’ standout performance this year was her third place finish in the U23 race at the ETU Duathlon European Championships in Nancy.
Trigold athlete, Adam Bowden will take part in his second ITU Triathlon World Cup this season having finished 12th in Holten and completing the British contingent is Ritchie Nicholls, winner of the 2010 GE Strathclyde ITU Triathlon European Cup in May.
Live text and timing from Tizaujvaros will be available at triathlon.org on Sunday. The women's race will kick off at 10:30am local time, with the men to follow at 1:30pm.
Morrison eyes home win for world title
One month from today, 5 August, Britain’s Catriona Morrison will bid to become World Champion at the 2010 GE Edinburgh ITU Duathlon World Championships. She last won the world title in 2006, and has since built a reputation as one of the world’s toughest endurance athletes.
Morrison will have home advantage, living just a few miles from the start line at the foot of the imposing Arthur’s Seat. As well as vocal home supporters, she’ll also have a strong GE Great Britain Team with her - 2010 European medallists Kat Grimmett and Katie Ingram have also been selected.
Athletes will complete a 10km run, 40km cycle ride and a further 5km run – the standard distances for international duathlon. They’ll scale Arthur’s Seat six times in total by foot, and a further seven times on the bike, making it one of the most challenging routes ever used on the international circuit.
Morrison said: “I've had a fantastic season this year with three wins out of three under my belt. I'm now training hard to make the 2010 GE Edinburgh ITU Duathlon World Championships in Edinburgh my fourth win of 2010."
The men’s GE Great Britain Team will feature Phil Wylie, Mark Buckingham, Rich Hobby, Pete Freeman and Adam Bowden. Both Bowden and Buckingham have come from an outstanding athletics background and will be closely watched by the international field coming to the Scottish capital.
Britain’s Under 23 GE Great Britain Team will feature Scottish athlete, Ritchie Nicholls, who is a former European Under 23 triathlon champion and excellent 10km runner. He’s joined by Mark Threlfall, Phil Wolfe and Matt Gunby.
The women’s Under 23 GE Great Britain Team features two-time World Junior Duathlon champion, Sophie Coleman from Brighton and Lois Rosindale from Yorkshire. The junior GE Great Britain Team will be selected after this weekend’s London Triathlon.
As well as the elite field, amateur athletes will race in the age group races on Saturday 4 September. Edinburgh’s medical student, Craig Dale, will be amongst the favourites to win gold having won the 20-24 Age Group at the European Triathlon Championships in Athlone, Ireland in July.
Twenty-year-old Angus Killean is the youngest Scottish member of the British team and local hero Arnott Kidd is the most senior at 75. Kidd was second in his age group last year at the 2009 Concord ITU Duathlon World Championships, and has won the European title for the last three years in a row.
Britain’s top Paraduathletes will also race in the elite international event on Friday 3 September.

Leitch and Duggan win British Cross Triathlon Championships
Ian Leitch and Nicola Duggan were victorious in the inaugural British Cross Triathlon Championships that took place as part of the Durty Triathlon in the Scottish Borders on Saturday 31 July 2010.
Weather conditions made the start of the race challenging, with elements of both the run and mountain bike section exposed to the elements. Nevertheless, 108 competitors in total took to the 15.9 degree swim, as they aimed to return home with the national title.
In the men’s race, Chris Stuart of the Army led competitors out of the water, although was quickly caught, as the rest of the field got the bit between their teeth on the challenging two-lap bike course.
Sam Gardner and eventual winner Ian Leitch, led the chasers and progressed on to establish a lead of several minutes.
Ian’s superior descending skills allowed him to open up a 1.56 gap and run to victory, recording a time of 1:59.17. Ian who is based in Brighton commented on the course after his win: “There were some tough sections on the mountain bike, with a great mix of technical elements and some sections being pretty exposed on the hills”.
Sam Gardner finished in second place with a time of 02:01.21, with a bronze medal going to Graham Wadsworth, who completed the course in 02:02.47. Graham commented: “[The] Run Section was brutal with a tough long climb, the short bike course was slippy and awkward, so just tried to ride it as smooth as possible. Happy with swim but needs more work as I came out the water two minutes after the leader.”
Nicola Duggan won the women’s race. She excited the water in third place, before overtaking the early leaders on the first climb of the bike course. By the end of the bike section, she had established a 12-minute lead, although as the run, her advantage was reduced to seven minutes. Nicola finished the race with a winning time of 02:26.30, with Ailees Anderson in second in 02:33:46. In third place, Darrelle Parker finished with a time of 02:38.36.

2010 Immenstadt ITU Long Distance World Championships – Race Report
With elites and age group athletes lined up for the 1800m swim, the spectators couldn’t help but feel it would almost be a shame to disturb the mirror like surface of the lake.
Immenstadt, in the heart of Bavaria, proved to be a spectacular backdrop to what promised to be one of the toughest ITU Long Distance World Championships in years. The swim exit, a steep run up a grass bank, would be a taste of things to come.
The bike course could only be described as a challenge. The course included 2000m of climbing over a number of alpine peaks, providing exhilarating descents for the competitors before cobbles and yet more climbs.
The highlight was the hill climb out of Immenstadt. The town certainly knows how to put on a triathlon party; you could have been at the top of a Col in the Tour de France with the crowd spilling onto the road from top to bottom. The fanatical support was an inspiring sight with the crowd parting to reveal a huge grin on the face of every athlete working their way up. Greg Ashley (40-44) said, “You just couldn’t help but enjoy the atmosphere.”
The 30km run looped through the centre of Immenstadt but by the time the athletes arrived at T2 the temperature had climbed to 30 degrees, and the demands of the bike began to take its toll. The consensus at the finish was that despite being shorter than an Ironman, Immenstadt was far tougher than any race the GE Great Britain Age Group Team could remember.
Congratulations to all the GE Great Britain Age Group Team who qualified for the championships and finished the toughest race for years. The German team dominated the medals podium but the GE Great Britain Age Group Team narrowly missed winning a medal in a number of age groups. Diane Lee (25-29) was fourth, Tim Bishop (40-44) sixth, Russell Cox (30-34) sixth, Chris Rhodes (30-34) ninth, Jonathan Heasman (35-39) eighth, Emma Richards (30-34) sixth, Jayne Parker (30-34) seventh, Mellissa Dowell (45-49) eighth and Don Hutchinson (65-69) fifth.
GE Great Britain Age Group Team Manager, Tim Whitmarsh said: “There were some excellent performances today and everyone who finished the event deserves our congratulations. The race was brutal from start to finish. It was incredible to watch team working so hard out there.
“Immenstadt has taken its toll on so many and it was great to see all those who raced in their GE Great Britain Age Group Team suit with pride. It was quite something!”
ITU Long Distance World Championship Round Up
There were no elite British athletes racing at this event, but a dedicated team of GE Great Britain Age Group Team athletes embarked upon the challenging bike course surrounding Immenstadt, Germany.
For full results from the event visit our official results partner, tri247.com.
In the elite event the course proved to be the difference in deciding this year’s event. France’s Sylvain Sudrie and Switzerland’s Caroline Steffen powered away from their competitors on the very difficult 130km bike course, and then held on for the win on the 30-kilometre run.
Both Sudrie and reigning champion Tim O’Donnell (USA) were at the front of the pack after the 4km swim, which took the top men just under 49 minutes to complete. Sudrie took charge of the race once he got onto the hilly course, finishing the 130km ride in 3:35:59. Also riding well on the non-drafting course were France’s Francois Chabaud and Germany’s Konstantin Bachor, who were the only two men to finish the bike leg in under 3:35. O’Donnell lost over five minutes to Sudrie on the bike and couldn’t make up any ground on the final leg.
Sudrie posted the second-fastest run of the day (1:56:26) to finish first in 6:24:57. O’Donnell ran only a few seconds slower than the Frenchman to pull up to second, finishing almost four minutes later. Chabaud rounded out the podium, finishing more than two minutes behind O’Donnell.
In the women’s race, Steffen led the way out of the water in 54:01, with Spain’s Virginia Berasategui and Germany’s Anja Ippach only a few seconds behind. Dutch superstar Yvonne Van Vlerken finished the swim over six minutes later and started the tough bike course with a big gap to make up.
No one could make up any time on Steffen on the bike, as the Swiss talent charged through the ride in 3:48:00, which was seven minutes faster than Van Vlerken and Berasategui. Steffen finished off the day with a 2:09:45 run to win in 6:55:21. Van Vlerken was a distant second, but posted the day’s best run en route to finishing in 7:07:04. Berasategui rounded out the podium, finishing six minutes back of Van Vlerken.

London Ready to Host 2012 Olympic Triathlon
With two years to go until the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the ITU Triathlon World Championships demonstrated that London’s preparations are right on track by hosting one of Europe’s largest triathlons in Hyde Park this past weekend. The event was organised in conjunction with the International Triathlon Union and the British Triathlon Federation. Over 3,000 athletes took part in the ITU World Championship Series event, including 130 of the world’s best Elite triathletes.
“Hyde Park offers the ideal venue to host an event of the magnitude of the Olympic Triathlon,” said ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado. “The course is very spectator friendly and will no doubt make the event one of the most memorable events of the 2012 Games. We’re very excited to return to London in 2011 to test the same course set for the Olympic Games, which runs around Hyde Park."
Debbie Jevans, Director of Sport at the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG), said: “Hyde Park is an iconic venue in central London and this will without doubt be one of London’s most popular venues putting on a world class Olympic event. We look forward to working on all the details of the event with the ITU over the next two years.”
This Tuesday, 27 July, marked exactly two years to go until the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, which will make London the first city ever to host three Olympic Games, having also hosted in 1908 and 1948. London demonstrated in emphatic style that it is ready to host the Games, by hosting one of the most successful triathlon events ever. Over a quarter of a million spectators lined the roads of London to watch Great Britain’s Olympic hopefuls, and they were not disappointed. Helen Jenkins claimed a bronze medal and the Brownlee brothers made it clear that there could be two Brit’s on the podium in the men’s race come 2012. 20-year-old sensation Jonathan Brownlee claimed silver, beating his older brother, reigning world champion Alistair, who led the race until 800 meters to go.
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson added: “The Triathlon World Championships are an exhilarating spectacle, both for the world-class athletes taking part and the fans cheering them on. Hosting them will be an opportunity for Londoners and visitors alike to experience the thrill of an Olympic sport on the capital's streets and for organisers to see one of the chosen venues in top-flight action as anticipation builds for the 2012 Games.”
In 2012, triathlon will make its fourth appearance in the Games, having made its debut at the 2000 Games in Sydney. The sport will feature the top 55 men and women in the world.
“We couldn’t be more pleased with the preparations made so far for London 2012,” Casado said. “We have no doubt that LOCOG will do everything possible to make the event hugely successful. Certainly after this weekend’s races London has clearly demonstrated that they are willing and able to host a truly amazing Games in two years time.”
Triathlon is anticipated to be one of the most exciting events in the Games, and also one of the most accessible with Londoners being able to watch the event for free.
Jodie Swallow has long-distance success at Alpe d’Huez
Current ETU Long Distance Triathlon European silver medallist, Jodie Swallow claimed victory in the spectacular Alpe d'Huez Long Course Triathlon.
The location, well known for its association with the Tour de France, is now in its fifth year and is becoming something of a classic in the triathlon world too. This 2.2km, 115km and 22km event, pushes triathletes to the limit, making Jodie’s victory all the more impressive.
This weekend has a long distance theme with the 2010 Immenstadt ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships taking place on 1 August.
Jodie Swallow won’t be defending her world crown but a 40-strong GE Great Britain Age Group Team will complete the 4km swim, 130km bike and 30km run.
The cycling course from Immenstadt to Oberstaufen will force athletes to ride up inclines of up to 18 percent and a gain of 2,000m – climbing more associated with Alpe d’Huez, than triathlon.
“Whoever is able to handle this cycle course best will be crowned world champion. In the past we have often seen race favourites overexerting themselves on the bike and thus running out of steam on the last kilometres of the run,” says German Altenried, President of the organising committee.
Triathlon fans from all over the world and the passionate triathlon population of the Oberallgäu region, will provide a perfect setting for the title race. The organisers estimate that on each of the two days about 20,000 to 25,000 visitors will come to cheer on the world’s best athletes with their cowbells, air horns and applause.
Good luck to all the GE Great Britain Age Group Team, and full results will be posted on Monday.
British Cross Triathlon Championships
The inaugural British Cross Triathlon Championships took place on the hills above St. Mary’s Loch in the beautiful Scottish Borders on Saturday 31 July 2010.
The event which won triathlonscotland’s Event of the Year in 2008 was hosted by the Durty Triathlon, and attracted a high-quality field from across the UK.
Chris Stuart of the Army led the competitors out of the water by around 30 seconds, with Nicola Duggan emerging first in the women’s race.
The two athletes lead, didn’t last for long, with the rest of the field taking the bit between their teeth on the two lap bike course. The hilly and technical course meant both leaders were caught. In the men’s race, Sam Gardner and Ian Leitch established a gap of several minutes, with Stuart gradually moving down the field, eventually finishing in seventh place.
In the women’s race, Nicola Duggan was caught by Ailees Anderson, Darrelle Parker and Kerry MacPhee but refused to let them take control. Duggan fought hard and stayed with the three athletes, and then found the extra burst she needed on the run.
Duggan re-took the lead, and ran away from her challenges establishing a lead of over seven minutes finishing with a time of 2:26.30.
In the men’s race, it became clear it was a two horse race with Gardner and Leitch pushing on and extending their lead. Leitch’s superior descending skills allowed him to open a ten-metre gap and run to victory recording a time of 1:59.17 – a course record by 20 minutes.
London 2012 – Join the team
The search for 70,000 London 2012 Olympic Games volunteers has started and British Triathlon wants experienced volunteers from within our fast moving, dynamic and modern sport to have the opportunity to be a part the most memorable Olympic event of 2012.
British Triathlon is keen to ensure volunteers have passion, enthusiasm and energy, alongside relevant sporting experience and an understanding of the sport.
To become a sport specialist volunteer, you will need a bespoke British Triathlon code and unique identifier, which is only available to Home Nation members and volunteers within a registered club or event. The code must be entered during the application process, which starts on 27 July (today) via www.london2012.com. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the British Triathlon community to be an integral part of 2012.
As a Home Nation member, you can log into your account online at www.britishtriathlon.org and complete a validation process to receive the code. Any club or event volunteers should contact their club secretary or local event organiser directly to receive the code.
This stage of the volunteering process is only available to experienced volunteers, and from 15 September, the wider volunteer recruitment campaign will start. There will be a strict vetting process in place, so early application is essential.
In your online application process, you will need to highlight relevant skills, experience and abilities before returning it to LOCOG. This will form the basis of a short list, so your relevant triathlon experience will be an integral part of your application.
The best way to acquire the relevant experience is to volunteer in a major event. In 2010, there are still events requiring volunteers including the 2010 GE Edinburgh ITU Duathlon World Championships on 3-5 September and GE Parc Bryn Bach Triathlon on 19 September. To apply for this event visit: www.edinburghduathlon2010.com/volunteers or www.britishtriathlonsuperseries.com.
Volunteering can open the door to a range of opportunities within the sport as Jonathon Riall, National Paratriathlon Manager comments: “As a volunteer at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, I was able to have a real hands on experience of a major international sporting event. Eight years on, I am now National Paratriathlon Manager for British Triathlon and would encourage anyone looking to get more involved or just to have a once in the lifetime opportunity to sign up and apply for 2012.”
John Lunt, Triathlon Event Manager at the London Olympics comments:”Experienced and enthusiastic volunteers are fundamental to the success of the games. This is where people from our great sport can be part of a fantastic, once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Head Coach, Joel Filliol is a strong believer in the value of experienced volunteers commenting: “To achieve success in the London 2012 Olympic Games is British Triathlon’s overriding objective for the next two years. To deliver that success requires world class support staff and volunteers to ensure that every aspect of the event is delivered to the highest standard and provide the best possible environment for our athletes to compete in.”
Improving Event Quality - North West offers £100 Golden Handshake for New Referees
The North West Region has been allocated a sum of money to improve event quality. The region is short of referees and does not have enough to cover all the events that take place. Referees are crucial in monitoring event quality and making suggestions for improvement. So the Regional Committee decided at their meeting in May to offer a £100 golden handshake to referees once they qualify. To become a referee you need to complete a learning pack and then shadow at 4 events before becoming qualified. Trainee referees do not receive any travel expenses or fees for this. Therefore we hope that the £100 will offset the cost and encourage more people to volunteer.
