Tata Steel breaks new ground with 24 Tata Kids of Steel triathlon events in 2012
Confirming its commitment to grassroots sport, Tata Steel has broken its own record for the number of Tata Kids of Steel triathlon events scheduled to take place during the year of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The new record will help meet the series target of giving at least 50,000 youngsters the chance to have a fun, positive experience of sport by the end of 2012.
Tata Steel in partnership with British Triathlon is now able to confirm the dates and venues of the Tata Kids of Steel triathlon series events next year. The series, which has doubled in size since its launch in 2007, will visit 24 locations across the UK between April and July. To date the Tata Kids of Steel triathlon series has enabled over 35,000 children from 400 schools to experience triathlon.
As the world celebrates sport in 2012, next year’s Tata Kids of Steel events will be the biggest series of children’s triathlon events in the UK, if not the world. Tata Kids of Steel events are inclusive and accessible to all school children aged between eight and 13 regardless of ability. The aim of the series is to give children a fun, positive experience of sport. All the equipment is provided, including bikes and helmets, and children only need to provide swimming and running kit. Every child receives a T-shirt, swim cap, gym sack and medal for participating.
Karl-Ulrich Köhler, MD & CEO of Tata Steel in Europe, said: “As the Corporate Partner of British Triathlon, Tata Steel has been instrumental in the growth, development and success of triathlon in the UK for the past six years.
“The Tata Kids of Steel events are truly inspirational – the children have a great day out, and are able to experience the fun and benefits of participating in sport. Tata Steel actively encourages employees to volunteer at the events, supporting the local communities Tata Steel operates in and enjoying the positive impact of these events.”
Zara Hyde Peters OBE, CEO of British Triathlon, added: “Next year’s Tata Kids of Steel series is the biggest yet, giving even more budding triathletes the opportunity to learn about our fast growing, modern and dynamic Olympic sport of triathlon in the year that Britain is hosting the Olympic Games. We hope to inspire our young audience to go to Hyde Park and watch our triathletes this summer.”
The series launches in the Olympic host borough of Newham, East London on Tuesday 23 April. There will be four London events in the north, south, east and west of the capital and the series will travel the length and breadth of the UK before finishing at Scunthorpe on Thursday 12 July.
Tata Steel employees will be volunteering to help at events in Teesside, Rotherham Workington, Scunthorpe, Swansea, Mold, Birmingham, Corby and Belfast, all close to Tata Steel manufacturing or distribution sites in the UK.

ITU becomes official member of the IPC
The International Triathlon Union (ITU) has been confirmed as an official member of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) a year after the sport of Paratriathlon was confirmed on the sports programme for Rio 2016.
Whilst last year's congress vote to recognise paratriathlon as a paralympic sport was crucial, official membership was the first step to full and established inclusion in the Paralympic Games. This year British Triathlon President and ITU Vice President, Dr Sarah Springman OBE and Marisol Casado, President of the ITU attended congress, highlighting the importance of paratriathlon within the sport.
Sarah Springman also attended a classification meeting alongside Eric Angstadt from the ITU to help demonstrate the development of the classification system to comply with the IPC and the progress made to produce the final model for Rio and beyond.
“There is still much to progress, but the positive reaction of the IPC to work done was excellent and attending IPC as a full member for the first time is significant milestone” said Sarah Springman.
"Not only will those who compete in Rio achieve their dream of becoming Paralympians, but now all Paratriathletes can consider themselves part of the international Paralympic family," added Casado, who is also an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member.
"It is an honour to officially join this Paralympic family, on behalf of the ITU I would like to thank IPC President Sir Phillip Craven and the IPC Board."
St Albans Triathletes get an early Christmas present from the GB Triathlon Team
Thirty members from St Albans triathlon club, Tri-Force, had the once in a life time opportunity to receive coaching from the GE Great Britain Triathlon Team at a unique GE funded masterclass on Saturday.
Keen triathletes of various ages and abilities from St Albans, Hatfield and Braughing, were given the chance to train side-by-side with arguably the fastest female swimmer in the triathlon world and 2011 ETU European Duathlon Championships Silver Medalist, Lucy Hall and 2011 British Duathlon Champion, Mark Buckingham.
Rick Velati, a World Class Talent coach for British Triathlon, led the training session exploring the intricate techniques involved in masterminding each of the three disciplines of the sport; swimming, cycling and running. Rick drew on the arsenal of knowledge that saw British Triathlon secure both the men’s and women’s individual and team world championships this year.
“We wanted to introduce the club to a few training drills that our GB elites are executing themselves. Many triathletes always overlook the basics. It’s not always about putting in the miles on the bike for example. Today we looked at dead turns (where you turn on yourself and loop back), drills to improve your running stride, and how to train for an open water swim in a swimming pool” said Rick, who has previously worked with two times and current World Champion Helen Jenkins.
Tri-Force won the GE Masterclass after crossing the finishing line first as part of a team relay race at this year’s Dextro Energy ITU World Championship event in Hyde Park. The club was exclusively invited to compete on the London 2012 Olympic Triathlon Course after getting involved in the Tri-Twinning Programme; an initiative launched by GE earlier on in the year that encourages GE business sites to join forces with their local Home Nation Affiliated Affiliated Triathlon Club, with the aim of encouraging more people to get involved with the sport in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Chrissie Wellington recognised for Outstanding Performance
Chrissie Wellington received the Pat Besford Award for Outstanding Performance at the SJA British Sports Awards in London yesterday, and Helen Jenkins was runner up in the Sportswoman of the Year award.
Britain’s leading sports journalists cited Wellington’s fourth Ironman world title in October, as well as world record in Roth earlier this year, as the reason for recognising her with the award, which was presented to her by former world record holding swimmer Mark Foster.
On receiving the SJA award, Wellington said: “Standing here I have to pinch myself. A few years ago I was an underpaid civil servant, taking paper clips out of paper and working the photocopier. Now I’m an underpaid professional sportswoman.
“My sport is demanding, that’s why I love it. I have achieved more than I could have imagined. I feel privileged, I feel blessed.”
Helen Jenkins was runner up to swimmer Rebecca Adlington for the top Sportswoman award. Jockey, Hayley Turner was third, whilst Mark Cavendish won the Sportsman of the Year award.

Brandon Lewis MP shortlisted for NEW Sports Parliamentarian of the Year award
Brandon Lewis MP has been unveiled as one of ten Parliamentarians from across the United Kingdom to make the shortlist for the Sport and Recreation Alliance’s Sports Parliamentarian of the Year 2011 – with the awards taking place at the House of Commons on Wednesday 14 December.
Brandon first became involved in triathlon when Sport England asked Members of Parliament to represent different sports as part of the Parliamentary Sports Fellowship Scheme. Since taking up his role, Brandon has wholeheartedly embraced our fast growing, modern and dynamic Olympic sport and helped build stronger relationships between the worlds of triathlon and politics.
Zara Hyde Peters OBE, Chief Executive of British Triathlon, said: “Brandon has wholeheartedly embraced our fast growing, modern and dynamic Olympic sport, and has helped to establish stronger relationships between the words of triathlon and politics. Brandon has devoted his time to participating in, and understanding, the sport he represents, enabling him to talk to colleagues with knowledge, understanding and passion.”
This is the first year for Sports Parliamentarian of the Year, which has been established to recognise the efforts of Members of the Commons and the Lords who have worked tirelessly with local people, clubs, organisations and governing bodies to promote and protect the interests of sport and recreation.
Andy Reed, chair of the Sport and Recreation Alliance said: “It’s great that this award presents an opportunity to pay tribute to those Parliamentarians who recognise the positive impact that sport and recreation have on people’s lives. We hope that the award will encourage even more Parliamentarians to make sport and recreation an even greater priority in years to come.”
The shortlist (highlights below) in alphabetical order is as follows:
1. Ian Austin MP, Dudley North
2. Lynne Featherstone MP, Hornsey and Wood Green
3. Rt Hon Don Foster MP, Bath
4. Baroness Grey-Thompson DBE
5. Huw Irranca-Davies MP, Ogmore
6. Brandon Lewis MP, Great Yarmouth
7. Stephen Lloyd MP, Eastbourne
8. Greg Mulholland MP, Leeds North West
9. Derek Twigg MP, Halton
10. John Woodcock MP, Barrow and Furness
Candidates were nominated by sport and recreation clubs, governing bodies and other organisations from the sector, and whilst all will be recognised and thanked for their contributions to sport and recreation, an awarding panel will choose one of the shortlisted individuals as the overall Sports Parliamentarian of the Year.
Triathlon job at the London 2012 Olympic Games
Triathlon Training Venues Group leader is a new position advertised by LOCOG for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The position will manage the operation of athlete training at the three triathlon training venues (Eton Manor Pools; Redbridge Cycle Centre; Newham Sports Complex) and competition venue including during pre-competition training days and warm-ups on competition days.
The role will begin in June/July 2012 and end on 8 August 2012, after the triathlon events have taken place in the iconic Hyde Park. Successful applicants will be expected to attend a number of training days beforehand in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
This is a triathlon specific role, for a full job description visit the LOCOG recruitment website
John Lunt, Triathlon Competition Manager commented: “The Triathlon Training Venues Group leader is a key member of staff within the triathlon team responsible for delivery of the Olympics. We are looking for dynamic individuals from the sport who wants to be part of the best event of the Games”.
Interviews for the position will be held in early February.
New qualification event for the 2012 ETU Duathlon European Championships
British triathletes looking to qualify for the GE Great Britain Age-Group Team at the 2012 ETU Duathlon European Championships will have a new qualifier to compete in after the Ashbourne Duathlon replaces the Clumber Park Duathlon as a qualification event.
The Ashbourne Duathlon set to take place on 28 April 2012, joins the Dambuster Duathlon on 10 March 2012 and the Oulton Park Classic Duathlon on 24 March 2012 as one of three qualification events for the championships, which are still to be confirmed by the European Triathlon Union.
The change of event follows the well-known Clumber Park Classic Duathlon unfortunately having to change its date creating a clash with the Oulton Park Duathlon on 24 March 2012.
The Ashbourne Duathlon is one of the key early season duathlon races and will now offer qualification as well as a National Championship - the event is also host to the inaugural Triathlon England – National Duathlon Championships.
The above qualification events for these championships are on the assumption that the European Championships will go ahead.
However, British Triathlon cannot guarantee the championships will take place in 2012, therefore those events selected as qualifiers may ultimately not count towards qualification for any GE Great Britain Age-Group team in 2012.
Duathletes enter those qualification races at their own risk, British Triathlon and the Event Organisers cannot be held responsible for refunding any entry fees or associated expenses if indeed the qualifier status is no longer valid at an event.
Please note that the races themselves will still take place regardless of the issues related to the qualifier status.
For more information on ITU and ETU qualification events for the GE Great Britain Age-Group Team, please visit the age-group section of the British Triathlon website.

ITU & ETU Duathlon Championships Update
British Triathlon would like to clarify the current situation regarding both the ITU Duathlon World Championships and ETU Duathlon European Championships in relation to the GE Great Britain Age-Group Team.
ITU Duathlon World Championships – Nancy 22nd & 23rd September 2012British Triathlon has received notification that the Local Organising Committee (LOC) currently has no plans to run a sprint distance event at the ITU Duathlon World Championships. The only distance available to age groupers will be standard distance duathlon. However we are of the understanding that this is currently under review by the Nancy LOC and the ITU. Should the sprint duathlon distance be included a statement will be placed on www.britishtriathlon.org immediately and a qualification process implemented. Any qualification events will not clash with, or be held at the same venue as the standard distance duathlon qualifiers.
ETU Duathlon European Championships 2012British Triathlon is of the understanding that the ETU has not yet identified a venue or date for the 2012 ETU Duathlon European Championships. The ETU is currently working hard to resolve the situation and ensure that the championships take place in 2012.
British Triathlon has already identified and announced its three qualification events for these championships on the assumption that the situation will be resolved.
British Triathlon will continue to support the ETU while it resolves the matter and communicate any updated news to age-groupers via http://www.britishtriathlon.org

GE Paratriathlon Talent ID Day Success
British Triathlon and Elite Team Partner GE invited budding paratriathletes to Loughborough last week to attend a GE Paratriathlon Talent Identification day at the National Performance Centre.
The day hosted 11 athletes from a range of sporting backgrounds with a range of abilities. The event provided the opportunity to test their skills and fitness levels with a view of being selected for a place on the Paratriathlon Performance Squad for the 2012 season and beyond.
Jonathon Riall, National Paratriathlon Manager commented: “This weekend has been an exciting time for paratriathlon. The GE Paratriathlon Talent Identification day has really helped to raise the profile of our sport and enabled new participants to get their first taste of triathlon. Britain is the top paratriathlon nation in the world currently and bringing in world class talent is vital to maintain that position as the sport builds to the possibility of Paralympic medals in Rio 2016.”

London 2012 unveils official uniforms for Games Makers and Technical Officials
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has unveiled the designs of the Games Maker uniform that will be worn by around 70,000 volunteers and 6,000 LOCOG staff and the Technical Officials uniform which will be worn by around 4,500 Technical Officials during the London 2012 Games.
The uniforms will be a visible presence for the millions of spectators who will be coming to London and the rest of the UK next year. They fulfil all the necessary practical criteria for a diverse range of Games Makers, LOCOG staff and Technical Officials to undertake the varied roles that will be required during the Games.
The Olympic Triathlon was one of the first sports to recruit its full allocation of sport-specific Games Makers and John Lunt Triathlon Manager for the London 2012 Olympic Games was delighted to see the uniforms unveiled:
“The Olympic Triathlon will have over a 1000 Games Makers and 40 Technical Officials working on what we hope to be one of the most spectacular events of the London Olympic Games. The Uniform will certainly add to the spectacle and colour of the events. I’m sure every volunteer will wear their uniform with pride.”
The design of the Games Maker uniform has drawn inspiration from the heritage and culture of the UK, influenced by the historic Grenadier Guards uniform and British Sporting heritage – including the London 1948 Games, Wimbledon Tennis and Henley Regatta but with a twist that reflects British quirkiness and modern design.
The Games Maker uniform, designed by LOCOG in association with London 2012’s official sportswear provider and British Triathlon’s Official Sportswear Supplier adidas, has a deep purple and poppy red colour scheme. The details on the uniform evoke the pride and heritage of the United Kingdom. The colours and details on the uniform celebrate the best of British sport, history and fashion.
Key features of the Technical Officials uniform include engraved buttons with Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, embroidery under the collar featuring the distinctive London sky line, the official’s oath as a label and lining inside the suit featuring iconic London buildings including the Gherkin and the London Eye.
Technical Officials may also wear a casual uniform depending on their sport. This uniform has been designed by adidas and is the same as the Games Maker uniforms however the colours are blue and white. International Federations will be able to use the epaulettes to carry the logo of their individual sports.
Each Games Maker will receive a jacket, polo shirt, trousers, trainers, socks, cap, bag, water bottle and an umbrella. Each Technical Official uniform will come with jacket, pair of trousers and skirt (for women), a shirt for men and a blouse for women, a belt, a bag which can fit a laptop, a Trilby hat and a tie for men and a scarf for women.
All the uniforms have been produced in ways that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimise waste and other local environmental impacts, while also taking full account of responsible sourcing throughout the supply chain. Suppliers and factories have been briefed with regards to the sustainability standards set by LOCOG, and regular audits are conducted to ensure that all products are sourced and transported in an ethical manner.
Games Makers will start picking up their uniforms from April 2012. Technical Officials will pick up their uniforms from June 2012.
Applications invited for British Triathlon Elite Multisport Programme
The programme aims to support athletes who demonstrate genuine potential to win medals at ITU World Championship level in the non-Olympic multisport events. For the foreseeable future, the programme will concentrate on standard distance duathlon and long distance triathlon although athletes who compete in other multisport events will be considered on a case by case basis.
In parallel with the multisport squad, British Triathlon will also send teams to named ITU multisport events. The level of support provided for each Championship will be found along with criteria to race in the selection policy for the event. These are published on the British Triathlon website.
Although it is expected that squad athletes attempting to qualify for their particular World Championships, they will have to obtain selection standard and will not be automatically selected for any specific race. In the same way, non-squad members can apply and be accepted onto championship teams if they meet the required standard.

Vicky Holland to race in Auckland
Vicky Holland will race the final event of the 2011 ITU World Cup series this weekend, with a return to New Zealand for the first time since 2008 and returns to Auckland for the first time since 1998.
Auckland is New Zealand’s biggest city and the Queens Wharf waterfront one of its most lively areas. It became even more so in the last two months, when it was home to the Rugby World Cup fan zone, which finished just last month with New Zealand’s own All Blacks claiming the title.
Now, triathlon gets it chance to shine right in Auckland’s CBD, with this event the perfect dress rehearsal for next year’s Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Grand Final.
British Triathlon confirms World Class programme for Olympic year
British Triathlon has confirmed 25 athletes for its 2012 and 2016 programmes, and 16 young athletes for the Olympic Talent Squad. World Champions Alistair Brownlee and Helen Jenkins lead the way, along with ITU Sprint Triathlon world champion, Jonathan Brownlee, as the squad focuses in on preparations for London 2012.
Athletes who are new to the programme include Mark Buckingham and Matt Gunby, who have successfully graduated from trigold, the scheme funded by Barrie Wells. Buckingham was recently recognised as the GE British Triathlon Elite Duathlete of the Year at British Triathlon's Annual Awards event, whilst Gunby won a second ITU Duathlon U23 world silver medal in Gijon in September.
Nineteen year old Lucy Hall joins the programme having had a breakthrough year. Her exceptional swimming speed saw her exit the water first against senior opposition at the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series events in Hamburg, Lausanne and Yokohama. She also won gold as part of Great Britain's junior mixed relay team at the ETU European Championships.
Hall was recognised as British Triathlon's Junior Female Triathlete of the Year, whilst Gordon Benson, 17 from Leeds, won the male junior award and will now also be part the squad having previously a member of the Olympic Talent squad.
Leeds based Non Stanford and Lois Rosindale are new additions having had successful seasons in races around the world. Talented junior Maddie Winzer from Richmond, also joins.
The Olympic talent squad includes members of the GE Great Britain Triathlon teams that won medals at both the ETU European Junior and Youth championships. Marc Austin, Miles Burton, Sophie Coldwell and Ellen McArthur were all medal winners along with Gordon Benson.
Olympic Performance Group Manager, Malcolm Brown, commented: "The 2012 squad is focused on delivering our target of one Olympic medal next summer, but we are also looking to the next Olympic cycle, having selected athletes who we think have the potential to make an impact in Rio in 2016."
