National Recognition for Clubmark club

Clubmark accredited Richmond Volleyball Club, based in Richmond, South West London, has won the coveted Sports Club of the Year award at CCPRs national awards ceremony. This first place trophy and £6,000 prize money, presented this year by Olympic champion Rebecca Romero, is awarded to clubs who have made an outstanding contribution to their community.

New Cumbrian Sports Workforce Education Programme with Clubmark at the heart of it

Helping clubs working towards Clubmark accreditation to access the courses needed to gain accreditation!

This year, Cumbria Sport Partnership along with a variety of partners, including Local Authorities and National Governing Bodies of Sport, has pulled together and published a comprehensive programme of courses to help upskill and increase the number of volunteers working in the sports field within Cumbria.

Accreditation for the first club affiliated to the British Council for Chinese Martial Arts

KIXX Martial Arts and Fitness of Granville Road, Maidstone has recently joined an exclusive group by becoming the first club of its kind in the country to receive Clubmark accreditation from Sport England. The club concentrates on the teaching of the Chinese martial arts.

A roll call of achievements…

Viking Kayak Club in Bedford has a number of reasons to celebrate. Not only has the Club recently become Clubmark accredited and only the third club in the country to be awarded the BCU's Top Club Gold, but it is also racking up a roll call of national and local awards; winning BCU's Club of the Year competition for 2009, hot on the heels of local success as Bedford Sports Club of the Year 2008, which it received just before Christmas.

Improving opportunities to get involved - both in terms of participation and volunteering

Pegasus Gymnastics Club has been working in partnership with Ashford & Mid Kent Schools Sport Partnership, its PDM, the Regional Development Officer, CSC and a satellite club in Ashford to increase and improve the opportunities for children and young people to get involved with gymnastics in terms of both participation and volunteering.

Spotlight on… Heather Lockwood

Heather Lockwood is the Club Welfare Officer at Tolworth Gymnastics Club, based in Surrey. As part of this role Heather has a liaison responsibility between and amongst coaches, parents and gymnasts. She also is involved in the day-to-day admin of the club.

Spotlight on... Dave Pettifor

Dave Pettifor is the Clubmark Co-ordinator for Nottingham Horseball Club. He has been involved with the Club since 1991 when he founded the Club.

When the Club had the opportunity to work towards achieving Clubmark accreditation, he co-ordinated much of the information for its portfolio and attended workshops with the British Horse Society to help him and others pull it all together.

Spotlight on... Jill Burgess

Jill Burgess is the Welfare Officer at Workington Cricket Club in Cumbria. It is a real community club involving the locals in spectacular Cricket Force days and fundraising for local charities. It has really good school club links and has participated in the ECB's Chance to Shine and Cricket in the Community programmes. Workington Cricket Club was the first club in Cumbria to gain Clubmark Accreditation back in 2003.

Did you know...

...there are now more than 5,000 Clubmark clubs - another milestone achieved

5,000 accredited clubs, 4,500 clubs working towards, 750,000 young people in the Clubmark family Sport England has a key outcome to increase participation in NGB accredited (i,e. Clubmark) clubs to one third of all 5-16 year olds by 2010.

All NGBs involved in Clubmark are continually striving to support this target, which is recognised by the fact that over 5,000 clubs are now accredited; an extensive geographic and sporting spread.

From rugby union in Berwick (North East); golf in Silloth (North West); down to tennis in Hythe on the South coast and cricket in St Just (Cornwall) all points north to south are covered. Then to complete the signs of the cross we have swimming in Lowestoft and canoeing on the Wirral.  Clubmark clubs are increasing in popularity and are now “open for business” all over the country. Check out the database to find which clubs are near you.

The story only begins here and whilst, 5,000 is a wonderful achievement in itself, it is supported by the ever increasing numbers registering as ‘working towards’ - there are now over 4,500 clubs committed to working towards Clubmark.

Many of these will be looking to develop school club links, if they haven’t got them already. PDMS and SSCOs should use this information (from the published and updated database) to ensure that these clubs can contribute to the 5 hour offer and extend the school offer into the community; working with clubs which are high quality and outward facing. KKP recently undertook a brief investigation into the number that are now part of the ‘Clubmark family.’ The results are staggering, 750,000 young people are engaged in sustainable sporting activity on a regular basis.

Sport England’s Clubmark is contributing strongly to improved health and reducing obesity. Furthermore, young people that attend Clubmark clubs are guaranteed minimum standards within the participation environment and as a result are, more likely to stay in sport and become the active adults of the future.
