Improving opportunities to get involved - both in terms of participation and volunteering

Pegasus Gymnastics Club in Maidstone Kent was founded by the current Director, Fef Griffin. Pegasus Gymnastics Club opened its doors, or rather those of a local Grammar School, on 9th September 1987.

From it's humble beginnings in a local grammar school hall, Pegasus Gymnastics Club now enjoys international recognition, a refurbished warehouse with olympic apparatus, full-time coaching staff and a newly opened satellite facility in Ashford. It caters for gymnastics activities from pre school through to adults in the disciplines of Women's artistic, Men's artistic, general gymnastics, trampolining and disability gymnastics. It has an active membership of more than 600 gymnasts that participate and compete on a regular basis from club competitions, displays and festivals to British Champions and international performers.

The Club has been working in partnership with Ashford & Mid Kent Schools Sport Partnership, its PDM, the Regional Development Officer, CSC and a satellite club in Ashford to increase and improve the opportunities for children and young people to get involved with gymnastics in terms of both participation and volunteering.

The list of actions that took place was endless and included assisting with the establishment and running of a satellite club, organising club based coach education seminars and other training and mentored learning.

The impact of these actions has had a positive effect on the Club and its wider community. For instance,

  • The PDM and other staff are now more knowledgeable about variety of opportunities in gymnastics for volunteers
  • There has been an increase in number of young volunteers - 1 Level 1 coach, 4 completed Proficiency coach award, 4 qualified Key Steps judges
  • All volunteers are better trained. This improved skill level has boosted self confidence
  • The Partnership Key Steps event 2009 was run entirely by school staff & volunteers
  • Quality of young volunteers has enhanced the Club's reputation & profile as a community club
  • The Club has seen a higher commitment and enjoyment amongst skilled volunteers

The Club feels that success has come from a co-ordinated and well planned approach within partnership, clear and effective communication between key people together with committed staff to support young people in volunteering - each with mentoring and support.
