Realising financial reward from Clubmark
Mansfield Giants originally formed in 1990, but through recent expansion and development Giants expect to have a big future and aim to become a key feature in English basketball over the coming years.
Giants have strong foundations in the local community as well as an excellent youth development programme competing at both local and national league level. The programme supports all age group for boys and girls, schools programmes and community coaching in order to provide an opportunity for the best young talent in the North Midlands to progress through the player pathway.
Prior to achieving Clubmark, the club commented that the main obstacle to their further development was having a large enough and suitably qualified workforce. Simply achieving Clubmark status has helped them to attract further volunteers to the club, but their situation has been helped by financial incentives from England Basketball.
The club received £500 for achieving Clubmark, as do all basketball clubs who successfully accredit, and have received further incentives totalling in excess of £400 over the previous two seasons for increasing their registered membership. The club also successfully nominated two ‘England Basketball Volunteers of the Year' for 2007/08 which meant they received £1,200 in prize money as opposed to the £400 they would have received if they had not been a Clubmark club.
These funds have been used to help the club attract, retain and reward volunteers to put them in a better position to grow in the near future.
The club's Joanne Richards commented: "The club would have continued without achieving Clubmark, but the guidance, support (both financial and administrative) and strengthened relationships between the club and England Basketball has acted as a catalyst to kick starting our club development plan - ensuring a sustainable future for Mansfield Giants."
England Basketball's Craig Costello stated:
"The process of directly incentivising Clubmark accreditation ensures that the PESSYP money we receive from Sport England goes directly to the clubs that help us meet our Clubmark targets. Also the clubs who have received the incentive payments, such as the Giants, should be in a better position to continue to grow and work towards the further development of basketball."
