Spotlight on… Hugh Williams

Hugh Williams is the Mini/Midi Chairman of Aldershot & Fleet RFC. He is also Volunteer Co-ordinator at the Hampshire club.

He has been involved with the club since 2003. Following on from England's success in the World cup his son (then 6) chose to join a rugby club, A&FRFC were handing out leaflets at our local carnival and we went down and joined a very young junior club with about 35 children at various ages

Hugh assisted with clearing up after the training etc and then attended the AGM where it was apparent that the existing committee were struggling to find time to commit so he volunteered as Chairman. The club now has over 170 juniors and can field full squads at all ages from U7 through to U16 with hopefully next season for the first time a squad at U17.

Taking the club through the accreditation process, he picked up the good work that had been undertaken by the previous chairman and the senior committee, and completed and co-ordinated the completion of the document with the assistance of the coaching co-ordinator and other members of the club. The club was awarded the SoA by the end of 05 and have continued to develop the procedures and processes required to maintain accreditation.

Hugh retains the position of Mini / midi chairman and takes responsibility for the club's continuing accreditation, although with the club growing it now has support teams providing both coaching and administration through out the whole club (an important point is that it trys to run the club as a single entity.

Testament to this dedication and hard work is the success of the Club. It has grown very quickly (especially when you consider that it does not have a club house), has been invited to take an active part in helping both the RFU and Sport England to identify better and innovative ways to continue developing the sport of Rugby and has improved links to schools and the local authority.

Hugh said, "The growth in the club has been outstanding, and that has a lot to do with the fact that we try and run the club in line with the requirements of the SoA. Also the involvement of the RFU as a governing body has also been very positive especially the support of the RDO."
