Talking Sport

What is Talking Sport?

Talking Sport seminars offer volunteers in community sport a new and stimulating way of learning about key topics and developing key skills to help them succeed and thrive in their roles.

They are high quality sessions, led by an expert facilitator with extensive industry knowledge and experience. The principles of peer learning and sharing of best practice are used extensively and seminars can be highly effective for varying group sizes.

After extensive consultation, an excellent range of Talking Sport Seminars have been developed. These cover themes including the recruitment and retention of volunteers as well as marketing and promotion of community clubs.

Seminars can also be specifically designed to meet the needs of groups who wish to construct a bespoke session comprising key elements from any of the 17 core topics or they may be new topics related to supporting volunteers in general.

Recent feedback

Stuart Rogers, Partnership Development Officer, South Yorkshire Sport, who recently staged a Talking Sport seminar:

"The event was attended by a diverse range of clubs and groups proved to be a great success.
The new format and style of peer-to-peer learning was well received and the opportunity to share best practice was also extremely valuable for us.
The flexible and adaptable nature of the session was excellent and created an opportunity for clubs to take the direction that best suited them and their needs.  The section of the seminar that focussed on action planning and the signposting to further information were new developments but all the clubs feel they gained great benefits from these.
We look forward to staging many more Talking Sport seminars in the future".

Remember, Talking Sport seminars are the new and exciting approach to learning and developing knowledge and skills for community sport volunteers.

Information for Organisers

Talking Sport organisers will decide the content of their sessions after they have consulted with people who will attend. There are two options for the format of the sessions...

Option 1 - focus on one topic
This type of Talking Sport session would focus on one topic, either from the list below or topics that have been identified in discussions with potential attendees.
During the session, there will be in-depth learning, sharing of best practice and planning for future activity. Follow-up support will also be planned and agreed.

Option 2 - combine up to three topics in one session
It may be that discussions have highlighted a need for a session that covers more than one topic. Talking Sport can accommodate up to three topics per session which again can be selected from the list or generated by demand.
An equal amount of time will be spent on each topic with a high level of learning offered on each. Best practice sharing and action planning will also be included as well as signposting to further information. Follow-up support will be planned and agreed.
